MsingiAI × NVIDIA Inception

A lot of AI progress over the last few years has happened in a surprisingly small number of languages.

Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of people speak languages that modern systems still barely understand.

That gap matters.

Today, I’m excited to share that MsingiAI has been accepted into the NVIDIA Inception Program.

We’ve been building speech AI systems for African languages, starting with Swahili ASR and TTS. The goal is simple: build models that actually work for the way people speak across East Africa, including accents, code-switching, noisy environments, and real conversational speech.

Most speech systems for African languages are still adapted from large multilingual models trained with very little local context. They often perform reasonably in demos and poorly in the real world.

We think there’s a better approach.

That means:

• collecting better speech data
• building for deployment constraints from day one
• optimizing for local use cases
• treating African languages as first-class AI problems, not edge cases

Recently, we released Sauti ASR publicly on Hugging Face. Open systems matter, especially in regions where access to infrastructure and research resources is still uneven.

Joining NVIDIA Inception gives us access to better tooling, infrastructure, and a broader ecosystem of AI companies building at scale.

More importantly, it’s a signal that serious AI infrastructure can and should be built for African languages.

There’s still a long way to go.

Speech recognition, voice systems, multilingual reasoning, and local deployment are still underdeveloped for much of Africa.

But the opportunity is enormous.

The next generation of AI products should not only understand a handful of languages spoken in a handful of places.

They should work for everyone.
